Breakdown Analysis

A breakdown analysis is a tool that can be used to identify the root cause of a problem. It is also known as a cause and effect diagram or a fishbone diagram. The main purpose of a breakdown analysis is to help find solutions to problems by identifying the underlying causes. The word is pronounced with the stress on the first syllable. A car can suffer a breakdown when something mechanical or computerized fails and the vehicle won’t run.

Breakdown maintenance is maintenance performed on a piece of equipment that has broken down, faulted, or otherwise cannot be operated. Unplanned breakdown maintenance can be more costly than preventive maintenance, because it typically causes downtime and interrupts production.
